As a Wilderness Instructor, you and a co-lead will be responsible for the physical and emotional safety of up to 10 participants while engaging them in activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, paddling, and snowshoeing in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Instructors work from a set itinerary, manage the risks of backcountry travel, and facilitate a variety of workshops and activities that help participants develop their own leadership style.   BOLD & GOLD is dedicated to inspiring courage and confidence in diverse groups of youth through outdoor adventures. As a program of the Camping & Outdoor Leadership branch of the YMCA of Greater Seattle, BOLD & GOLD offers year-round partnership programs and summer expedition experiences. Partnership programs engage with schools, non-profits, and community-based organizations to design and implement transformative outdoor experiences. The summer expedition program runs single-gender and all-gender expeditions that engage youth through frontcountry and backcountry trips ranging in length from 5 to 15 days. BOLD & GOLD experiences take place in Mt Rainier National Park, North Cascades National Park, Olympic National Park, National Forests, Washington State Parks, and local green spaces. Activities include backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, snowshoeing, fishing, yoga, art, music, and literature. The goal of BOLD & GOLD is to increase confidence, courage, emotional intelligence, wonder, and community awareness in our participants. Maintains and repairs furnishings and equipment, including developing and implementing preventative maintenance plans and related budgets. Supervises staff assigned to housekeeping. Supervised by the Senior Program Director and perform other duties as assigned.   Must be 21 years or older to apply. Assistant Directors are supervised by Sr. Program Directors and perform other duties as assigned. Our kitchen staff take part in trainings with other members of the program teams and will get training in their department and their specific kitchen position. They’ll work alongside the full-time kitchen team to help with food prep, dishwashing and maintaining overall cleanliness of the kitchen. This is a crucial role in providing delicious and healthy camp meals in a highly organized manner. Trip Leaders for this program will be responsible for leading a group of teens out into the San Juan Islands for adventure, peer to peer leadership and skill development. Trip Leaders will teach advanced boat handling, advanced navigation, and expedition planning, and will be responsible for trip logistics and route planning. The first are our Leadership Development Institute (LDI) courses. We offer two- and three-week LDI courses that combine a kayaking expedition or challenge course focuswithyouth work and leadership experiences, and service projects at Orkila and in the Orcas Island Community. Our pure expedition (kayaking) courses send teens out into the San Juan Islands for one, two, and four weeks of adventure, peer to peer leadership and skill development. Rock Climbing Instructors are certified to work at all of the Y’s artificial climbing sites in King County. We have four climbing sites located at YMCA branches in Auburn, Shoreline, Bothell, and SeaTac. Our climbing positions involve working with various ages and skill levels from youth to adult, teaching skills and technique through program instruction and ensuring a safe and organized climbing environment. We are looking for applicants who have a passion for helping people push themselves and learn through adventure. Applicants must be safety conscious and dedicated to using best practices at all times. Site-specific training and certification is required and provided.
