    GENERAL FUNCTION

    Assistant Directors provide leadership across all Orkila and Colman programs. Responsibilities include coaching and supervising staff, working with campers, managing the day to day operations of camp, and assisting in problem solving as unique and challenging situations arise. Previous experience working with large groups or managing others in a professional setting is required. Assistant Directors are supervised by a Summer Program Director and perform other duties as assigned. 

    Responsibilities

    1. Lives with and manages the health, welfare and development of twenty to twenty four female campers, ages 11 - 15.
    2. Oversees daily supervision of seasonal camp staff.
    3. Assists Camp Director in leading and organizing daily leadership workshops.
    4. Assists Camp Director in providing consistent disciplinary procedures.
    5. Coordinates and/or facilitates adventure activities such as climbing wall, low ropes, and offsite trips with Camp staff.
    6. Designs necessary workshops and trainings with Camp Director prior to the beginning of staff training.
    7. Co-leads staff training with Camp Director.
    8. Demonstrates an interest and sensitivity to the issues related to working with youth.
    9. Acts as a role model to youth and staff by exhibiting an overall sense of enthusiasm, humor, patience, and thoughtfulness.
    10. Ensures that all campers are accounted for and safe at all times.
    11. Ensures the health and safety of all participants and staff. Communicates personal or camper needs to supervisor in a timely manner. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

    Qualifications

    1. 21 years of age or older.
    2. Experience in supervision is preferred.
    3. Ability to work as a team with cabin leaders and director.
    4. Skills in teen leadership development.
    5. Experience working in programs that promote diversity, leadership, self-esteem and service-learning helpful.
    6. Experience working with children or teens in a residential camp environment.
    7. Ability to facilitate outdoor adventure activities such as group initiatives, climbing wall, and camping.
    8. Ability to participate in activities that involve rigorous activity in an outdoor setting, including, but not limited to hiking, boating, camping, and swimming.
    9. Ability to maintain endurance required to provide constant supervision of campers while on duty.
    10. Current certifications in CPR and First Aid and current documentation available upon hiring/arrival.
    11. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical activity, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
