    Job Summary

    The Staff Accountant will be responsible for the review and development of policies as pertains to implementation of internal controls and treasury management. This position serves as a liaison between the accounting department and Business Managers at various branches in a support and educational role.



    1. Plans, organizes, and carries out the internal control function including the preparation of an internal audit manual and internal audit plan.
    2. Actively participates in the development of internal control policies, ensuring they are relevant to the YMCA’s operating environment.
    3. Oversees treasury operational activities for the organization and serves as first point of contact and liaison with YMCA banks.
    4. Oversee and reconcile all bank statements with accounting clerk and intern support.
    5. Supervises the accounting clerk, intern, and other accounting positions as assigned.
    6. Reviews the management responses to internal and external audit to ensure that recommendations are implemented; follow-up on audit action plans to ensure all action items are resolved before the next annual audit.
    7. Provides finance training and support for branch Business Managers, focusing on cash handling and management at the branch.
    8. Manages receivable write offs and works with branch management and the Operations department to reduce overall receivables.
    9. Analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts.
    10. Assist in month-end closing of the general ledger including preparation and posting of appropriate journal entries.
    11. Provides support for the annual external audit as needed.
    12. Assists in the budget process as needed.
    13. Provides coverage for duties of team members as needed.
    14. Other duties as assigned.


    • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance or equivalent experience.
    • 2+ years’ experience in accounting or related field.
    • Fundamental knowledge and understanding of GAAP.
    • Solid understanding of internal controls and accounting policies and procedures.
    • Experience with ACTIVE Net (or similar customer facing database) a plus.
    • Experience with Great Plains or similar Accounting software preferred.
    • Excellent computer skills and experience working with word processing, spreadsheet and database software including Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers and employees.
    • Requires strong organization skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
    • Strong customer service skills, including responding to multiple questions via phone, email, and in person.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.


    • Experience in writing policies and procedures, process evaluation, and documentation.
    • Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
    • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
