    Where you’ll work…

    You’ll be based out of one off the 13 branches that offers programs ranging from health and wellness, to family programs, to child care, to aquatics (access is a staff benefit - swim a few laps before work, take a yoga class, do some laps on the track before you go home, if you like!).  Specifically the Seattle Y offers summer camp programs throughout the greater Seattle area.  The programs are located in community parks, schools and other community buildings.  Programs use classrooms, multipurpose rooms, gyms, outdoor spaces and take frequent field trips.

     

    The Seattle Y offers a competitive pay range and part time or full time benefit packages, as eligible.

    Responsibilities

    What you’ll be doing…

    Every day hundreds of children participate in fun and engaging YMCA summer day camp programs. The Specialized Skills Camp Counselor serves as a professional role model for our campers by leading through example and guiding campers through activities that teach life skills, encourage healthy and safe behaviors and create a positive camper experience. This position is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing experiences for children in a small group setting. They will be asked to lead experiences for youth in specific skills areas; teen leadership, archery, boating, climbing, etc. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in his/her group. Be part of an amazing team of staff focused on teaching teamwork and social skills, and support children as they grow and learn. Recreational activities with campers, include but are not limited to, arts and crafts, sports, social recreation, songs, sports, nature hikes, archery, and other games and enrichment activities.

    If you're the right candidate for the job, you are excited to spend your days impacting the lives of children.  You will have a special skill or talent to share with children at Y camp. You thrive on the energy of groups of children and are ready to jump in and lead activities.  You are always stepping up to offer support at the first sign it's needed.  You are comfortable with individual and groups of children, can talk to and partner with parents and other adults, and have an interest in and aptitude for learning new ways to work with kids.  You have an eye for quality programing and can build a sense of belonging with the groups you work with.

    Qualifications

    You are 21 years of age or older and should have:

    • 1-2 years of experience with children in a camp
    • High school graduate or equivalent
    • Previous work experience in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games
    • Ability to model and demonstrate Y values; caring, respect, responsibility and honesty
    • Experience planning and implementing group activities

    If position requires driving:

    • Current Driver’s License with a minimum 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards
    • Maximum one minor violation
    • No speeding violation of more than 20mph over the limit
