What you’ll be doing…

Every day hundreds of children participate in fun and engaging YMCA summer day camp programs. The lead camp counselor serves as a professional role model for our campers by leading through example and guiding campers through activities that teach life skills, encourage healthy and safe behaviors and create a positive camper experience. The Lead Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing experiences for children in a small group setting. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in his/her group. Be part of an amazing team of staff focused on teaching teamwork and social skills, and support children as they grow and learn. Recreational activities with campers, include but are not limited to, arts and crafts, sports, social recreation, songs, nature hikes, archery, and other games and enrichment activities.


Where you’ll work…

You’ll be based out of one off the branches that offers programs ranging from health and wellness, to family programs, to child care, to aquatics (access is a staff benefit - swim a few laps before work, take a yoga class, do some laps on the track before you go home, if you like!). Specifically the Seattle Y offers summer camp programs throughout the greater Seattle area.  The programs are located in community parks, schools and other community buildings.  Programs use classrooms, multipurpose rooms, gyms, outdoor spaces and take frequent field trips.

We are hiring for multiple camps operating out of 10 branch locations please see below for branch locations and camp age groups:

North Region:

  • Dale Turner Family YMCA (South Snohomish and North King Counties)
  • Northshore YMCA (Bothell, Kenmore, Woodinville and Duvall)

Central Region:

  • University Family YMCA (North Seattle, Sand Point, Ballard, Phinney, Greenlake, Lake City)
  • West Seattle & Fauntleroy YMCA (West Seattle, Fauntleroy, Beacon Hill, White Center, and South Park)

South Region:

  • Matt Griffin YMCA (Burien, Des Moines, Normandy Park, SeaTac, Tukwila)
  • Auburn Valley YMCA (Kent, Pacific, Algona, Federal Way, Renton and Enumclaw Plateau)

East Region:

  • Bellevue Family YMCA (Kirkland, Redmond and Surrounding areas)
  • Coal Creek Family YMCA (South Bellevue, Newcastle, Renton and Southeast Issaquah)
  • Sammamish Community YMCA (Sammamish, Issaquah, Preston, Redmond and Fall City)
  • Snoqualmie Valley YMCA (Snoqualmie, Fall City, North Bend and Surrounding Areas)

  • Kids on Their Way Camp - Grades: Pre-K entering Kindergarten
  • Discovery Camps - Grades K-5
  • Outdoor Day Camp - Grades 1st – 4th
  • Sports Camp - Grades 1st – 6th
  • Trek Camp - Grades 4th - 6th
  • Quest Camp - Grades 7th – 9th
  • Specialty Camp – Grades 2nd - 6th

Who are you?

If you're the right candidate for the job, you are excited to spend your days impacting the lives of children.  You thrive on the energy of groups of children and are ready to jump in and lead activities.  You are always stepping up to offer support at the first sign it's needed.  You are comfortable with individual and groups of children, can talk to and partner with parents and other adults, and have an interest in and aptitude for learning new ways to work with kids.  You have an eye for quality programing and can build a sense of belonging with the groups you work with.

You are 21 years of age or older and should have:

  • 1-2 years of experience with children; camps, child care, tutoring, nanny, coaching
  • Ability to model and demonstrate Y values; caring, respect, responsibility and honesty
  • 1 year + experience leading others as a supervisor or coach
  • Demonstrated experience planning and implementing group activities
