We are seeking an experienced head coach with a passion for Masters swimming who can motivate adult swimmers who are looking for a combination of demanding workouts and a fun, social atmosphere. The coach will develop seasonal training plans, be on-deck for each workout and actively engage with swimmers, providing instruction and feedback. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable of current training and stroke techniques. Previous Masters coaching experience is less important than the candidate’s knowledge of competitive swimming and his or her passion for coaching a diverse group of adult athletes. Our Masters swimmers pride themselves on being a fun-loving, diverse group with a range of skills and goals.



Organizes and conducts team workouts. May supervise other coaches as assigned. Acts as a liaison and champion for YMCA Total Health.


  1. Organizes and administers all assigned coaching responsibilities, including annual and seasonal workout plans, daily practices, recruiting, record keeping and scheduling.
  2. Be on deck for 6-10 workouts per week depending on schedules.
  3. Create workouts balanced within the context of the seasonal training plan, that meet the needs of the broadest possible range of team members based on stroke, speed and distance.
  4. Develops positive relationships with team members and provides motivational support and guidance.
  5. Foster and encourage an athletic, competitive, and social atmosphere that is welcoming and inclusive, retaining the culture of the YMCA and promoting aquatic sports and competition.
  6. Increases team member awareness of all healthy lifestyle factors and YMCA values.
  7. May supervise assistant coaches.
  8. Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
  9. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  10. Attends swim meets and swim team functions as agreed upon with supervisor. Accountable for discipline and conduct of team members at these events.
  11. Encourages YMCA & USMS involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  12. Conveys basic knowledge of all program areas to members and participants and as appropriate refers members to Total Health program or staff member.


  1. 18 years of age or older.
  2. Current state approved first-aid certification.*
  3. Current state approved community CPR certification, or equivalent.*
  4. American Red Cross Coaches Safety Training or equivalent.*
  5. One year or more of swim team experience preferred.
  6. Ability to teach proper competitive swimming techniques.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of sound competitive swimming skills, and the ability to implement and teach these skills in a positive, healthy manner.
  8. Knowledge of basic exercise.
  9. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
