Where you’ll work…

 

You’ll work in our welcoming aquatic facility that offers programs ranging from swim lessons, to aquatic exercise classes, to family swim, and so much more. Access to all 13 locations of our YMCA association is a staff benefit.

Responsibilities

What you’ll be doing…

We are looking for trustworthy leaders who want to make positive connections with our members and program participants in this multifaceted role. As the Aquatics Specialist you will be the one lending a hand in all aspects of the aquatics programs, acting as a leader for the team while splitting your time between coordinating programs, supervising staff, serving as lifeguard, swim instructor, and/or water fitness instructor (depending on facility). While in ratio as a lifeguard you will set the tone for a safe environment for kids and families, playing a key role in ensuring safety standards are met. When working as a swim instructor you will teach children and adults water acclimation and safety, water movement and stamina, and stroke development and mechanics. In your role as a water fitness instructor you will lead water fitness classes, developing positive relationships with class members providing motivational support and guidance. Overall as the Aquatics Specialist you will be the dynamic key player stepping in and helping the aquatics team consistently provide quality programing to our community.

 

Who are you?

If you're the right candidate for the job, you would consider yourself a jack of all trades when it comes to aquatics and have the ability to transition seamlessly between roles when given multiple work responsibilities. You have experience supervising staff, are flexible, reliable and have a strong work ethic. You are a certified lifeguard and you love teaching the joy of swimming to children and adults. You are a natural leader and have strong communication skills, thrive on serving kids and families and can step up to offer support at the first sign it's needed. You keep the safety of participants at the forefront of your work while teaching participants and leading fellow aquatics team members to thrive in an aquatic environment. Expect to work a flexible schedule.

Qualifications

You are 18 years of age or older and have:

  • 6 months+ of lifeguarding experience.
  • Current state approved first-aid certification. *
  • Current state approved CPR certification – Pro or Basic Life Support. *
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer*
  • Swim leader or instructor certification, or equivalent.*
  • Lifeguard certification – YMCA or Red Cross. *
  • YMCA of Greater Seattle scanning training or equivalent*
  • YMCA certification or equivalent in area of specialty (i.e. SCUBA, synchronized swimming). *
  • Demonstrated knowledge of specialized aquatic skill area and ability to implement and teach these skills in a positive, healthy manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist children and others in the development of swimming skills
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Water Fitness Instructor or equivalent (in some facilities). *
  • Ability to demonstrate proper water fitness techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fitness protocol.
  • Must be observant and able to react calmly, quickly and with good judgment in an emergency.
