What you’ll be doing…

YMCA of Greater Seattle is seeking a leader to support one of the Y’s best leadership development programs as a Program Instructor for YMCA Earth Service Corps (YESC). In this role you will guide and direct all aspects of the YMCA Earth Service Corps program. YMCA Earth Service Corps is a youth-led leadership development program that focuses on environmental education, cross cultural awareness and service learning. YESC empowers teens to take a hands-on role in addressing environmental issues, creating a sustainable community and developing connections with the natural world.


  1. Deliver environmental education, leadership development, cross-cultural awareness and service learning programming to middle and high schools.
  2. Serve 5-6 schools through extracurricular, school-based environmental clubs that engage, educate, and empower youth to address the environmental issues in their community.
  1. Role model positive leadership and an ethic of service that instills confidence, inspires young people, and fosters a spirit of stewardship and conservation in teens.
  2. Responsible for coordinating club-based programming, designing and implementing curriculum and supporting youth-led environmental service-learning projects.
  3. Support leadership retreats for students, regional service events that bring together youth from across the area, and lead outdoor activities
  4. Collaborate with YMCA Earth Service Corps staff to plan two conferences including a Environmental Leaders Summit and Environmental Symposium.
  5. This position will require occasional outdoor, physical work in all weather conditions. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
  6. The YESC model strives to adapt to the needs of the young people we serve and requires enthusiasm, passion, flexibility, and a willingness to learn.



  1. Plans and implements culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities within the curriculum in accordance with the Youth Development goals of the YMCA.
  2. Supervises a group of children to ensure their health and safety and to provide for a positive experience for each child.
  3. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
  4. Professionally engages with parents/guardians to provide pertinent information about their child’s experience and to promote upcoming programs.
  5. Ensures that toys and equipment are clean and safe, set up and stored properly.  Reports equipment problems to supervisor.
  6. Attends staff meetings and training programs as required.
  7. Other duties as assigned.



  1. 18 years of age or older.
  2. High school education or equivalent.
  3. Ability to plan and initiate culturally relevant and age appropriate games and activities.
  4. Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  5. Current state approved first-aid certification.*
  6. Current state approved community CPR certification.*

*At hire, or earliest possible training (but no later than 90 days after employment)


  • One year+ previous experience with children and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • 6 months+ experience teaching specified activity/skill hired for.
  • Program lesson planning and instructional skills.  
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.

Program participants learn new skills in an enriching and supportive environment.  Member expectations are exceeded resulting in increased retention.
