Job Summary

*This is an on-site position

Coordinates and supervises the day-to-day operations of the aquatic programs. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.  Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Lifeguards and teaches classes as assigned. Acts as a liaison and champion for YMCA Whole Person Health. 

Hiring Range: $24/hour - $26.40/hour DOE

Responsibilities

  1. Provides day-to-day coordination of aquatic programs, including acting as a liaison between Aquatics Director and staff, and serves as the primary point of contact in the Aquatics Director’s absence.
  2. Assists in supervising staff and volunteers, including hiring, training, providing evaluation input, and scheduling staff to ensure safety and quality of program delivery.
  3. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas. Prevents accidents by ensuring compliance with Aquatic Safety Plan and local health department standards.
  4. Maintains knowledge and ensures all YMCA, state, county and Aquatic policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures are being adhered to.
  5. Act as a primary responder in case of injury, accident, or illness and reports injuries, completing required forms.
  6. Assists with pool administration including the creation of the schedules and performs chemical testing, taking appropriate action when necessary.
  7. Maintains aquatic program areas and equipment with a high attention to cleanliness and safety, immediately notifying a supervisor of any broken equipment.
  8. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  9. Assists in developing program materials and distributing program information, including developing positive relationships with participants and parents encouraging involvement and identifying potential volunteers.
  10. Attends and assists in conducting all staff meetings, trainings, and in-services as scheduled.
  11. Teaches aquatic classes and lifeguards, as necessary.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Code of Conduct for Applicants

Qualifications

  1. Be 21 years of age or older.
  2. Ability to obtain certification as a Lifeguard Instructor, Swim Instructor Trainer and Child Abuse Prevention Trainer once hired.
  3. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness, including ability to lift equipment and small to average sized children
  4. Must be observant and able to react calmly, quickly, and with good judgment in an emergency.
  5. Demonstrated ability to assist children and others in the development of swimming skills
  6. At least two years’ experience and knowledge in aquatics including demonstrated ability to teach different levels of swimming.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Valid Lifeguard certification from YMCA of the USA or American Red Cross with Basic Life Support, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen*
  2. Y Lifeguard Instructor Certification or equivalent**
  3. Two to three years of supervisory experience preferred.
  4. Knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.

*Within 30 days of employment or at first available training.  If Red Cross certified, must complete Y Lifeguard Certification class within 90 days of hire.
