Tell me about this job!

Rock Climbing Instructors are able to work at all of our artificial climbing sites in the YMCA of Greater Seattle area. You may be hired as belayer or facilitator, depending on experience and training. Our climbing positions involve working with various ages, teaching skills, instructing participants, and ensuring a safe and organized climbing environment. We have three climbing sites in the Seattle Metro area: Shoreline, Bothell, and SeaTac. Additional training and certification is required and provided.

Compensation: $20.50/hr

Responsibilities

What you'll be doing

  1. Plans and implements activities which may include specialized programming such as rock climbing, bouldering, belaying, teambuilding, and group games.
  2. Pre/Post inspection of rock climbing areas, equipment and surrounding areas.
  3. Proactively report equipment and supply needs to management.
  4. Responsible for instructing, training and coaching individuals and groups to ensure physical, mental and emotional safety.
  5. Must be able to communicate instructions and information in a developmentally appropriate manner.
  6. Timely recordkeeping and reporting to management.
  7. Responsible for responding to all situations in a climbing setting, including participant and belayer rescues.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

Variable schedule, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Qualifications

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. Have experience and knowledge of using specialized climbing and challenge course equipment.
  3. Previous successful experience engaging children and teens in group activities.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Current First Aid and CPR.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, post-secondary education in related field strongly preferred. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.
  • Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (language, age, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
  • Experience with anti-racism practices.
