Job Summary

Lead Youth Development Instructors teach teamwork and social skills to children as they grow and learn, providing support to participants in multiple areas from childcare, online learning support, to enrichment & recreation activities.  They help support the onsite functions of a site with additional responsibilities related to parent interactions, check in and out and site management.


Job Sites Include: North City Elementary


Position Type/Location

This is an in-person, Full-Time regular role. Shifts are a combination of AM programming (7am to 9am) and afternoon programming (2pm to 6pm M-F, with Wednesday starting at 1pm). Administrative hours are provided and AM shifts are variable due to program need; some split shifts and some full days will be required.  The position is based out of the North City Elementary location and requires Lead to drive a mini bus.

Minimum compensation: $22.00/hour

What you'll be doing

  1. Drive a minibus of members to programming.
  2. Plans and implements culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities within the curriculum provided.
  3. Supervise children, ensuring health, safety and a positive experience for each child.
  4. Provide guidance to staff/volunteers overseeing the activities of groups of children.
  5. Professionally communicates day-to-day, confidential and evaluative information with parents/guardians.
  6. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
  7. Assists in maintaining developmentally appropriate site including appearance, décor and cleanliness of site.
  8. May prepare and serve snacks. Cleans snack area.
  9. Assists at Check in or out for parents.
  10. Assumes responsibility for program operation when DCYF designated and qualified staff is not on premises.
  11.  Program lead when supervisor is not onsite.
  12.  Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
  13.  Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

What we're looking for in an applicant

  1. 21 years of age or older.
  2. 1-2 years’ experience with children, camps, childcare, tutoring, or nannying.
  3. Have completed 12 credits of 100-level or above college-level coursework.
  4. Ability to model and demonstrate Y values; caring, respect, responsibility and honesty
  5. Experience planning and implementing group activities
  6. Completion of minimum STARS required training*
  7. Certification in CPR/First aid*
  8. TB test by Mantoux method.*
  9. Food worker card.*

*At hire, or earliest possible training (but no later than 60 days after employment.)


This position requires driving:

  • Current Driver’s License with a minimum 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards.
  • Maximum one minor violation.
  • No speeding violation of more than 20mph over the limit.


Preferred Education/Experience

  1. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
  2. Experience driving passenger vehicles.

Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.
